At present, I am using a D60. It is possible to shoot RAW with the camera. However, except for minimum adjustments like WB etc. in camera, I am not able to edit its RAW files after downloading the files into my computers as the software Photoshop CS I am currently using does not recognise its RAW file with "NEF" extension.
What to do? Please advise.

Hi Debasish,
Since Photoshop CS is comparatively an old version, adobe does not support it now. Hence the Camera RAW plugin for D60 is not compatible with the CS. The D60 is supported only in Camera RAW 4.4.1 and above. And these are available only for Photoshop CS3 and above. Hence you need to have at least Photoshop CS3 to open RAW images from the D60. Another cheaper option is to install Photoshop Elements 5 and above (current version is Elements 8) and include the latest Camera RAW plugin.

I think Adobe DNG converter could help you. This is a free software from Adobe that they keep updatinng to include ever inceasing raw formats from different manufacturers. So this software will convert your raw file into Adobe DNG raw format. Then you can open the DNG file in Photoshop.

Ravish, the DNG converter comes with the Adobe Camera RAW, and there is no backward compatibility with older versions of photoshop.

The information that I have is that the D60's RAW is not supported in CS2 because by the time D60 was released, the CS3 was already in the market and Adobe started support for D60 from CS3 onwards. And here, Debasish has CS installed, not even CS2.

Can the photoshop elements be downloaded from the Net? Is it a free software?

You won't get anything absolutely free from Adobe or Microsoft. Elements trial version can be downloaded free from www.adobe.com, which is free for 30 days. After that, you need to purchase the license.
